It’s been four episodes and I think now would be a fair time to chime in on
my thoughts of this new series, Gundam OO. Before I delve into it I just want
to make a few things known just so it will give you an idea of where I’m
coming from. I like Gundam but I don’t love it. My favorite Gundam Shows
are G Gundam (uh oh) and 08th MS Team (best UC ever).

I haven’t seen all the shows. I’ve seen some of Z Gundam and its hilariously awesome angst and some of
Gundam Wing and its dedication to cool and techno. Seed was ok but I didn’t care for the designs much. So
point being is that I’m not an uber diehard fan of the franchise. I don’t know the all the mobile suits by name
but I can tell you that Gouf Custom kicks ten shades of ass.

Now I told myself that I would commit to watching this new show. Been a while since I’ve seen a Gundam
show so why not start at the beginning of Gundam OO?
So my opinion is of a guy who doesn’t know much his Gundam history but is more or less coming in fresh
expecting nothing.
Now onto the show.
The show starts off with an unnamed human boy battling giant walking armored tanks. It’s quite the desert
war zone (In fact most of the planet is under one form of military conflict or another). Then out of nowhere a
Gundam mobile suit destroys the suits from the sky as the unnamed boy looks up in awe. *cue Larc* music
opening. Later on we see that unnamed boy again piloting a Gundam, which they refer to as “Gundam
Meisters”. The boy is named Setsuna F. Seiei and he’s the main protagonist of our show. Along with several
other Gundam Meisters pilots they are apart of an organization called “Celestial Being”. Setsuna grew up in
the Middle East but is Japanese (At least I’m guessing he’s Japanese as he sure doesn’t look like he’s from
the middle-east and has a Japanese name (kinda like that Indian kid in Gundam Wing. He’s blue eyed and
blonde haired. Sure.)
There are three political groups; The Union (western continents), the Human Reform League (China, Russia
& India) and the European Union AEU. Celestial Being and their Gundam Miesters stop two warring sides
from fighting by attacking both sides and crippling their abilities to continue fight each other. Other words they
are instilling peace through force via their four Gundam Miesters (a concept that from what I’ve been told isn’t
new in Gundam but it’s never been this heavily emphasized). There’s a big shock wave of confusion and
outrage at the existence and actions of the Celestial Being. It has a very real world feel as you see affected
governments and even people in media scramble to find out more about them.
After four episodes not much is known really other than the head of Celestial Being is some dude who died
200 years ago (oh, a mystery). Also the Gundam Miesters are far superior to the military weapons on earth.
The cast themselves are pretty non-defined personalities. It’s almost like watching the cast of Aliens. You got
the Strategist, the reckless yet stoic youth, the religious guy the apathetic drunk captain (At least the
apathetic drunk captain is attractive so hey, kudos to her.) The story so far is alright. There is fighting but the
fighting is so one sided that it’s not really exciting. There is this weird thing that happens in this show where
characters finish each others sentences. The thing is the characters are totally in different locations and
scenes as it happens. It’s dramatic, adds a poetic vibe to but it makes it sound as if they’re just talking to
themselves in an empty room. Looks nice and executed well so I guess that’s all that matters. I actually had to
watch episode three two times because I fell asleep. That say more about me than the show I figure but not
much really happens.
Episode Four for me was the most intriguing one however as you have a country trying to manipulate the
Celestial Being into fighting for them but it backfires. What this shows is that the Celestial Being will not be
manipulated. There is a new character introduced that may prove interesting as she's a young girl who's also
a super soldier (I know this because she goes by the name Super Soldier 01) who's main job will be to
capture a Gundam Miester. On the character development side Setsuna is having the equivalent of 'Nam
flashbacks as he's some violent, war like images in his head. Episode five promises to show some
character back story.
It took a while but this show does have my attention. Maybe I'll watch the whole thing after all.
