"Venom? Spider-Man?
Venom VERSUS Spider-Man! Sideshow? Sideshow doing Venom versus Spider-Man statue?!
What? They got pictures? Let me see!!
Oh, that’s it? Really? Wow, what’s the exclusive one look like? Well, that’s a little better."
That my friends, was my initial reaction to seeing the Venom versus Spider-man statue
from Sideshow Collectibles. It really wasn't what I was expecting. In fact I know a lot of
people weren't too thrilled with what they saw. The forum talk on various forums wasn't
too kind. The piece in question wasn't trashed or mocked by any means; it just didn't
meet lofty expectations a statue with the names “Venom” and “Spider-Man” would have
on it. But now the statue is out and it’s time to take a look at the final product in all it’s
glory.
Now the statue I’m reviewing is the Sideshow web site exclusive version of Spider-Man
vs. Venom where ol’ web head is pulling the symbiote off Eddie Brock’s embittered
face. Personally I preferred the exclusive version over the standard release statue
(which has a fully faced Venom who has his tongue wrapped around Spider-Man's arm)
as I consider it the more dynamic of the two which leads me to introducing a new
category that we at henshinhobby.com will use when doing reviews. That category
being “style”.
In fact This is less of a diorama and more of a Venom bust with a spider-Man sculpture
on top of it. At the very least a full body Venom would have been nice. In fact I'm sure a full
body Venom would have been incredible.
The sculpting on Venom and Spider-Man is great. You have very buff Venom exploding
out of some concrete type structure with an ambushing Spider-Man on the pounce (trust
me; I’m making it sound more exciting than it actually is). I don’t see a single sculpting
flaw in this piece. The detailing on Venom’s left hand is very well done and impressive, it
looks very organic and alive. A bit of a "Carnage" touch if you will. The detail of Eddie
Brock’s partially exposed face is done very well as is the sharpness of Venom’s lower
jaw with that double row of crooked teeth. The lower Jaw is a bit too long for my taste as it
gives me more of a "Violator" feel and less of a Venom one but to each his or her own.
The paint applications on The Venom/Spider-Man piece is ok. It’s not terrible by any
means but my Spider-Man has a smudge on his chin. The lines on his suit aren't perfect.
I've seen two of these up close and all have had the chin smudge while some have had a
smudging on the chin, forehead and arm. It’s a rather straightforward paint scheme with a
little artistic license shown on the hands as the usual white squares on Venom's morphing
left wrist with a darker purple shade on it. I was hoping to see more color variation with
the pulled off Venom face instead of a muted tongue color. It’s not as detailed as the
prototype that’s on the Sideshow site.
The packaging is really nice. If there is one thing Sideshow really shines on is their
packaging (I mean my god, have you seen the box for the HULK premium format? I can
smuggle my brother into the country in that thing). You have really attractive graphics of
statue in on the box along with personalized stats of each character including that range
from weight and height to powers and weapons. It’s a nice little tough that adds a lot to
that “big fight” vibe that you’d expect from Venom and Spider-Man.
Being a collector of Japanese hobby collectibles over the years I've found that style is a huge appeal factor for me. While some
may like the more museum Bowen-esque type of statue I prefer the more dynamic approach to things (in action figures, statues
– everything). Now does this statue have the style of the Wolverine vs. Sabertooth diorama? HULK vs. Spider-Man? No it
doesn't and with two insanely popular characters like Venom and Spider-Man I don't think it's too much to expect their versus
diorama to be on the same level as the Wolverine/Sabertooth and the HULK/Spider-Man ones.
The MSRP (Manufacturer‘s Suggested Retail Price) for this statue is 124.95. For a statue of this size and quality it’s worth the
price. If anything the price is lower than what I expected. It’s a more than fair price for a Sideshow Marvel diorama statue. If this
were an import piece you could expect the Venom vs. Spider-Man to at least be 200 (and the exclusive web site edition version
to fetch for even more). I don’t foresee the 124.95 that Sideshow is asking for to be a problem for people. At least it shouldn't be.
While I may be a bit hard on this statue by no means am I saying that this is a terrible statue, far from it. I've seen terrible and this
isn't it. It’s a very well made statue that’s only real fault is that it didn't live up to the expectations of the fans. Spider-Man versus
Venom conjures up images of dynamic battles. Unfortunately the statue didn't deliver. The concept was poor but the execution of
that concept was great. Normally one would be excited when they hear that a Spider-Man vs. Venom statue has appeared at
their front door.
Sadly this was a rare occasion where the words Venom, Spider-Man and statue didn't generate any excitement. If anything it
asked me if any other packages arrived.
